A tube of oil colour already contains the binder it needs, so an oil painting medium is never compulsory. It becomes useful when you want the paint to behave differently: longer brushmarks, smoother glazing, faster drying, a higher sheen, or a surface with real body. The practical question is not which medium is best. It is what you need the next layer of paint to do. A finely modelled portrait, a quick plein air study, and a cold wax landscape may all use oil colour, but they ask for very different handling.
What an Oil Painting Medium Changes
A medium changes the working properties of oil colour without replacing its pigment strength. Depending on its formulation, it can alter consistency, transparency, drying rate, gloss, brush drag, and the flexibility of the dried paint film. It can also make paint easier to spread, which means a small amount often goes further than expected.
Paint straight from the tube is usually the soundest starting point for strong, opaque passages. Add medium when the technique calls for it. Excess medium can make colour feel weak, create an overly glossy finish, or leave a layer that does not handle as intended. More medium is not automatically better paint.
Thinners and mediums serve different jobs. A solvent such as odourless mineral spirits thins paint and evaporates. It does not remain in the paint film as a binder. A painting medium stays in the layer, contributing oil, resin, wax, or alkyd binder. This distinction matters when building durable layers.
The Main Types of Oil Painting Mediums
Refined linseed oil
Linseed oil is the traditional choice for increasing flow and transparency. It gives colour a rich, enamel-like quality and is especially useful for glazing, soft transitions, and controlled brushwork. It also increases gloss and tends to slow drying, particularly in thicker applications.
Use it sparingly in later layers, when you want paint to move more freely without becoming overly thin. Linseed oil can yellow somewhat as it ages, most noticeably in pale colours and paintings kept away from light. That is less of a concern in dark passages or warm palettes, but it is worth considering for high-key work.
Walnut and safflower oil
Walnut oil offers a slightly paler alternative with a smooth, fluid feel. Many painters choose it for lighter palettes and for paint that needs gentler handling. Safflower oil is also pale and is often used in white and light-coloured oil paints, but it generally dries more slowly.
Neither is automatically superior to linseed oil. The choice depends on colour, drying schedule, and the feel you prefer under the brush. If you are building a painting over several sessions, test the drying time in your own studio conditions before relying on a new oil medium.
Alkyd medium
Alkyd mediums are the dependable option when drying speed matters. They improve flow and often add gloss while allowing a thin layer to become touch-dry much sooner than a traditional oil medium. This is useful for painters working in layers, for commission schedules, and for anyone painting in a limited studio window.
The trade-off is a different feel. Alkyd paint can become tacky faster on the palette and may not offer the open working time needed for extensive wet-into-wet blending. Use a modest amount, mix thoroughly, and keep your palette covered when possible. In cool or humid Canadian conditions, even fast-drying formulas may take longer than the label suggests.
Solvent-free gel and fluid mediums
Solvent-free mediums are well suited to shared studios, home workspaces, and artists who prefer to reduce solvent use. Available in fluid and gel consistencies, they can increase flow or add body while retaining the handling of oil paint more closely than a simple solvent wash.
A fluid medium suits glazing and smooth application. A gel medium holds brushmarks and makes paint feel more substantial without loading it with a great deal of extra oil. These are useful everyday options when you want predictable handling and a more comfortable studio routine.
Stand oil and oleogel
Stand oil is linseed oil that has been thickened through heating. It levels beautifully, reduces visible brushmarks, and produces a strong glossy finish. It is often used in small quantities for finely finished work and controlled glazes.
Because it is thick, stand oil is commonly combined with a compatible thinner or medium to make it workable. Used heavily on its own, it can make paint feel stringy and slow to dry. Oleogel offers a related option for painters who want a thicker, more structured oil medium that stays where it is placed.
Cold wax medium
Cold wax medium changes both the body and surface character of oil paint. It creates a soft, matte-to-satin finish, builds texture, and supports scraping, incising, layering, and embedded marks. It is particularly effective for landscape, abstract, and mixed-media approaches where the surface is part of the image.
Cold wax is not simply a thickener for ordinary brush painting. It works best in relatively thin layers and is often applied with a knife, squeegee, brayer, or firm brush. Too much wax can weaken adhesion and make later layers difficult to manage, so follow the manufacturer’s recommended paint-to-wax ratio. Allow each layer adequate time to set before adding the next.
Match the Medium to the Technique
For transparent glazing, begin with a small amount of linseed, walnut, stand oil mixture, or a purpose-made glazing medium. The paint should remain richly coloured, not look like tinted oil. Apply it over a thoroughly dry layer and use a soft brush to avoid disturbing what is underneath.
For alla prima painting, where passages are completed wet into wet, medium may be needed only occasionally. A small amount of solvent-free fluid medium or oil can improve movement in stiff colours. If your paint already has the right consistency, leave it alone. Fresh, direct brushwork often benefits from restraint.
For impasto, choose a product designed to build body, such as an oil painting gel or paste. Adding large amounts of oil to make a thick passage is rarely a good solution: it can slow drying and encourage wrinkling at the surface. Build texture with a painting knife and avoid heavy peaks in areas that need to dry evenly.
For fast layered studies, an alkyd medium makes practical sense. It lets you establish a lean block-in, return sooner for correction, and maintain momentum. For a more traditional, slower approach, a simple oil medium may give better blending time and a softer transition between colours.
Build Layers With Fat Over Lean
The traditional fat-over-lean principle remains useful. Early layers should contain less oil and be relatively lean. Later layers may contain more medium or oil and are therefore more flexible. This helps prevent a fast-drying, rigid layer from sitting over a slower, more flexible one.
A workable approach is to use lightly thinned paint for the initial drawing or block-in, then use paint with a little medium for subsequent layers. The final details may be mostly tube colour again if that gives the handling you need. The point is not to follow a rigid recipe. It is to avoid making early layers oil-rich and later layers comparatively dry.
Let each layer dry sufficiently before glazing or making major changes on top. A surface that feels dry to the touch may still be curing underneath, especially with white, black, earth colours, thick paint, or slow-drying oils. Patience at this stage protects both the surface and the clarity of your next layer.
A Practical Studio Setup
Keep one medium on the palette at a time while you learn its character. Label the container, use a small dipping cup, and add the medium to the brush or paint mixture in small increments. This prevents an accidental overpour from changing every colour on the palette.
Use separate containers for clean medium and brush-cleaning solvent. Oily rags and paper towels should be stored in a closed metal container intended for solvent waste, then disposed of according to local municipal guidance. Good ventilation remains wise even with solvent-free products, since oil paint materials and cleaning practices still require care.
For water-mixable oils, use mediums made specifically for water-mixable oil colour. Traditional oil mediums can reduce the paint’s ability to mix with water, which defeats one of the system’s main advantages. The materials may look similar, but they are not always interchangeable.
Before committing to a large canvas, make a test panel. Paint identical swatches with tube colour, your chosen medium, and different ratios. Record the date, mixture, drying time, sheen, and texture. That small reference panel becomes more useful than a generic formula because it reflects your paints, your support, and your studio.
Choose the medium that supports the mark you want to make, then use only enough to get there. A carefully selected medium gives you more control without distracting from the colour, structure, and surface of the painting.
